We ran two letters yesterday about the "Sheriffs Annual Drug Education Program" fun draising going on right now in Polk County. One writer drew some conclusions on his own from a story we ran last Friday, the other seemed to want us to draw some conclusions for him, which we will do here. It is hard to say what this fun draising program is all about. Officials for the Nashville, Tenn, firm, Benefit Shows, won’t return phone calls and the Nashville Better Business Bureau has no record of the company. The operators hiring people to get on the phone and ask for our money, a father and son from Concord, N.C., arc "indepen dent contractors" and claim not to know anything about the finances of the campaign. "If we could win just a one-quarter of a percent rate drop, the money spent going to New York would not be a drop in the bucket," said Jeannie Martin, chairman of the Polk County Board of Commission ers. Martin will be joined by County Manager John Lewis and Polk County Schools Supt. James F. Causby. The trio will attempt to con vince the N.Y. bond raters of Polk County's financial sound ness. If they arc successful, it could mean huge savings. A quarter of a point drop in the interest rate on the $14 million of bonds would equal a savings of approximately $27,000 per year over the 20-year life of the bond, or about $540,000. "If we make any difference al all, it could make a huge dif ference," Martin said. Polk County Finance Officer Rowena Swcezy said Polk's school bonds will go to the printer April 17th.
